An exciting development in Manual Wheelchairs today is the use of a combination of electric motors and Mecanum wheels, which allow the chairs to move laterally and in all other directions on a horizontal plane, and also in manners one would expect from normal wheels. The implications in added convenience and mobility are enormous. With a simple joystick, the users of this chair can maneuver in ways normally expected only from people with the use of both legs. As a result, the patent for these wheels was actually purchased by the US Navy for research in other field applications.
