Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition, DSM-IV, containing the criteria for diagnosis for binge eating disorders (B.E.D) is authored by American Psychiatric Association, Washington, DC. As an official eating disorder, binge eating disorder is a part of the “not otherwise specified” category of DSM-IV.

Research is being done to determine the exact diagnostic criteria for B.E.D to make B.E.D as its own category in the DSM. According to Columbia University psychiatrist, B. Timothy Walsh, MD, chairman of the DSM-IV working group on eating disorders, numerous tricks are needed to treat multifaceted B.E.D.
