Weimer Germany was alsoing facing widespread unemployment and huge inflation due to repayments in accordance with the “Shackles of Versailles,” but they were a very functioning democracy and a leader in arts and sciences. J.M. Keynes book on the period is an excellent description of the impact that the Treaty of Versailles would have on Western Europe. He lasted less than a week in Paris before returning to London to write the book.

@MikhailSilverwood
Left is very fragmented in U.S. The strongest movement in Left is LGBT movement which have been escalated from Obama’s victory and passing of Prop. 8. Second biggest in Left is probably immigrant right movement. But current economic crisis may shift American more toward anti-immigrants sentiment. It really is up to Left to utilize the current frustration and anger with Obama and economy to radicalize people to Left relating LGBT and immigrant issues as class issues.

dwhirmire49 on 27 December, 2009 at 4:50 am #

Is a blatant lie Chomsky blaiming the right for the economic failure. It was a combo of corruption in both partys and drivenb y the Black Caucus. If can dismiss that statement you are totally unisformed.

dwhirmire49 on 28 December, 2009 at 11:52 pm #

If you want socialism and more taxation and government control of your lives you are spot on here. If not you are very uninformed.

MikhailSilverwood on 29 December, 2009 at 9:35 am #

@unorthodoxtrotsky While at Marxism 2010, I got to ask Ashley Smith a couple of questions.
I’m hoping that the hard-left - the people who aren’t Obama-apoligists, who are free from Democratic garbage - can organise a movement that can become a powerful force.
It is very difficult, America is extremely rightwing, the labour union movement is dead, the anti-war movement is pitiful.
But there is a massive anger across the country; the workers are angry at so many things; it’s fertile ground.

unorthodoxtrotsky on 1 January, 2010 at 1:31 am #

@MikhailSilverwood
As you remember on video “Chomsky on Lenin and Trotsky”, he oppose Leninism and we happened to be Leninist organization. He even said in his book “Chomsky on Anarchism”, he doesn’t want to associate with Leninists. Couple of my comrades said they did tried to invite Chomsky but it was difficult. We are more closer to Howard Zinn. By the way, there was Marxism 2010 conference in Australia already???? We are planning to have one in Chicago about two months later. :)

unorthodoxtrotsky on 2 January, 2010 at 2:48 pm #

@MikhailSilverwood
And unlike Chomsky have said, Left IS organizing to fight back in U.S. I heard there is going to be another counter-protest called “Coffee Party” against Tea Party. lol There will be mass counter-demonstration against celebration of Hitler’s birthday in Chicago. Also Chomsky is not a contributor of ISR. I happen to be a member of organization that publish ISR and we had published couple of Chomsky’s interviews in ISR but he never contributed.

unorthodoxtrotsky on 4 January, 2010 at 1:55 pm #

@MikhailSilverwood
Hey Mikhail. Chomsky was partially right that there were certain working class people who were misinformed by FOX News. However if you actually look at those who were behind Tea Party and organized it, those who gave free bus ride to Christian fundamentalists and other far Rights for mobilization, Ashley Smith was more right than Chomsky. Tea Party protestors are also organizing with Minutemen, Christian Rights and Nazis to celebrate Hitler’s birthday in Chicago.

tryanjohnson on 7 January, 2010 at 7:52 pm #

The left can be very anti-social itself.

nonameposter on 10 January, 2010 at 6:46 pm #

Whose dick is bigger? Lol, you are a stupid nationalist!
Of course Chomsky is very popular, but in little Austria we have many, many left economists and philosophers, due to much influence of the labour unions.
It is true, in Europe we do not have an Obama-superstar. Of course we have a different system: Not one important president, but a ruling parliament. But you are right: politians in Austria are generally not able to speak well, are lazy, boring and tired

ePhilosopher9 on 11 January, 2010 at 7:14 am #

So after having done that, you pass Healthcare and trillions for bullshit, not legalizing it? FAIL FAIL FAIL YOU SUCKASS PRESIDENT! You don’t fool me, Kenyan boy. And Harvard must suck if you want us to believe your Economic policy has an inkling of a brain. You’re a total fraud. You weren’t even born here, you shit. Do you know what the penalty for treason is, Barry? You swore to defend the Constitution. You suck at it deliberately. You’re fired, asshole!
Love, We The People

alphecca2539 on 14 January, 2010 at 4:07 am #

Who is Austria’s Noam Chomsky? Has he been silenced?

Say - - Where is Europe’s Barack Obama? How come you cannot produce someone like him?

In my experience of over two decades traveling and living abroad when Euros
start regurgitating Chomsky it is an attempt, futile in each case, to expiate the immense, lingering guilt they feel for sending 6 million of Europe’s best and brightest to unspeakable deaths.

nonameposter on 17 January, 2010 at 8:28 am #

You are a nationalist, proud of the US and Anti-the rest. I am not Anti American. In fact, many things are good in the US (less racism, friendly people, mixed culture, one language..) But some are still quite primitve and 19th century like. People do not seem to have much power and seem to get manipulated easily.

nonameposter on 19 January, 2010 at 11:11 am #

Out-breeding..Yes, this is wrong.. the 2nd generation does not have more children and many educated mulsims realise, that Gods does not really exist. Have you been in Switzerland? They have more direct democracy than any other country. You are right, media is not controlled by the government, but I think they are controlled by corporations. Look at these people fighting against health care. This is ridicolous.

@alphecca2539 “Envy of America is the one common in all the encounters I have had with Chimpsky’s European fans. ”

Why on earth would Chomsky fans envy America? I am having great trouble deciding whether you’re a troll or an idiot. You happily respond to facts with ad hominems and ceaselessly prattle about the fact that you are an ex-pat (or so you claim) - did that not teach you anything? A fucking tree could out-debate you.

webbtje on 21 January, 2010 at 6:57 pm #

@alphecca2539 “I’m an American expat of over 2 decades. ”

I know that mate, you seem intent on saying that in every other comment.

“I don’t doubt Chimpsky is widely cited.”

Mainly because he is a prominent political analyst - and again, have you forgotten about his contributions to linguistics? Nah, doubt you ever knew he contributed at all, he probably just slagged off someone you like at some point.

alphecca2539 on 23 January, 2010 at 3:02 am #

@nonameposter No, by Eurabia we mean Europe is overrun by Mohammedans. They are out-breeding you, 3 to 1. Participatory democracy is dead in Europe, which is why you are fascinated with the Tea Party movement in the US, and the way politicians like Obama and Palin go from small-time local to national level in a matter of years. US media is far less govt-controlled than what you have in Europe, but you need to tell yourselves Fox (pay per view) is somehow forced on the American people.

nonameposter on 26 January, 2010 at 12:19 pm #

Haha, I have heard of the conspiracy that Europe is run over by arabians. Well, this is wrong. Democracy is dead? Why? It is the true that the Europe is getting more imperialist, but the situation in the US is much worse, I think.

alphecca2539 on 26 January, 2010 at 7:51 pm #

@webbtje ” I also like how you’ve completely ignored the fact that he’s the most cited living academic,”

I’m an American expat of over 2 decades. I don’t doubt Chimpsky is widely cited. Envy of America is the one common in all the encounters I have had with Chimpsky’s European fans.

alphecca2539 on 30 January, 2010 at 6:12 am #

@webbtje “Chomsky is way further left than your silly little yank conception of ‘liberal’.”

I loves watchin you silly Euro Leftards shake your little fists at the big bad Yankee.

webbtje on 31 January, 2010 at 6:22 am #

@alphecca2539 Going through your recent comments, I can only wonder whether Chomsky bullied you as a child or something. In fact, that and the namecalling you’re happily up to (Eurabia?) can only draw me to the conclusion that you’re still a child yourself. Correct?

webbtje on 1 February, 2010 at 8:53 am #

@alphecca2539 Certainly will, he deserves the money. I also like how you’ve completely ignored the fact that he’s the most cited living academic, and forgotten that he’s one of the most influential linguists alive.

But hey, marketing genius yeah? You’d probably do quite well in PR yourself with expressions like ‘dipshit Euroweenie Leftard’. True wit.

alphecca2539 on 3 February, 2010 at 10:54 am #

@nonameposter Commentators like you make Americans laugh. Democracy is dead in your native Eurabia so you losers obsess about America.
